More to March than Madness

by Acworth Inn 20. March 2011 23:19

March is an understated month and rarely gets a lot of attention except for Lions, lambs, St. patrick, and college basketball. On Cape Cod, March is a month of endless possibility. We have just started to be teased with some milder temperatures and we want to get out of the house and do something. There are so many options for residents and vistors alike. Historic Route 6A is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the country and is known for its historic architecture and natural beauty. The typical Cape Cod gray shingle houses with white trim abound, many framed by old stone walls erected since revolutionary times. These multiple shades of gray are a fabulous backdrop to the emergence of bright spring colors, as the early shoots of daffodil, hyacinth, and forsythia are slowly starting to begin their annual return. Along our fabulous beaches, the sea grasses are turning from their winter browns to bright greens and a brisk walk on the beach is perfect for shaking off the cobwebs of the winter soul!

If you are a lover of history and genealogy, no jaunt along 6A (aka Old King's Highway) is complete without a stop at the Sturgis Library in historic Barnstable Village, right in the middle of the Cape and about 5 minutes from the inn. In addition to being a full service library, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, dating back to 1644 and is the oldest building housing a public library is the U. S. It is well know locally and nationally for its impressive historic and genealogical collections, a fascinating maritime history collection, and has documents and information on Cape Cod towns dating back to the 1600s. More information can be found at www.sturgislibrary.org.

Happy New Year from Cape Cod

by Acworth Inn 3. January 2011 17:06

Well, the holidays have come and gone and we are all in resolution mode!

Hopefully one of your resolutions is to spend more time on vacation or taking care of yourselves. Toward that end, why not plan on spending some time on the Cape this winter? So many assume since this area is known as a summer resort, that everything is closed here. Take it from the locals, there's a special kind of magic that is Cape Cod in winter. Our guests are surprised to learn that we get usually get very little snow. Even the recent east coast storm left the Cape with just over a couple of inches and most of it was gone within a day or two. Being surrounded by the sea has its advantages, even in winter! The early morning light rising from the east (very early) is brilliant and a favorite for photographers. The beaches and hiking trails are so peaceful and perfect for an invigorating walk. This can be followed by a warm bowl of steaming clam chowder or a hearty seafood lunch or dinner, as most of our favorite eateries are all still open!

There is great theater, symphony and other local music, movies, and lots of interesting indoor things to do. If you want to really spoil yourself or someone you love, let us arrange spa services for you, either here at the inn or at one of our several great local spas. If nothing else, curl up in our common room with a good book or puzzle and enjoy the downtime.

So start your new year off right with a trip to the Acworth. We hope to see you soon.
